Designers Dream Big at the Academy of Art University

New York Fashion Week is a dream for designers the world over. That very dream recently became the reality of ten designers from the Academy of Art University whose collections were featured in the September, 2017 incarnation of the famous fashion show. Hailing from such disparate locals as China, Mexico, California, and Illinois, these students represent an exciting cross-section of the fashion industry.

Graduates debuted two menswear and five womenswear collections inspired by a wide variety of cultural experiences, fabrics, landscapes, and socioeconomic concerns. These AAU designers garnered numerous accolades, awards, and recognitions that included BCBGMAXAZRIA Super Intern, the San Francisco-Paris Sister City Scholarship Exchange, inclusion in the CFDA Fashion Future Graduate and Digital Showcases, and selection as finalists for the CFDA Elaine Gold Launch Pad.

Founded in 1929 by painter and editor Richard Stephens, the Academy of Art University prides itself on instilling a spirit of creativity and innovation into its students. Widely known as the largest privately owned art and design school in the US, AAU offers over twenty-five associate, bachelor’s, and master’s degrees in a variety of subjects. Art education, art history, advertising, architecture, industrial design, fashion, photography, illustration, and game design are some of the various programs of study offered.

The Academy of Art University boasts over 70 student and alumni gallery exhibitions and art shows each year in the university’s hometown of San Francisco. However, the vision of AAU graduates reaches far beyond the greater bay area; 2017 marks the 21st runway showcase of the AAU School of Fashion at New York Fashion Week.

Students enrolled in AAU’s School of Fashion have access to innovative faculty, highly-specialized facilities, and courses covering fashion design, costume design, merchandising, fashion styling, and fashion journalism, among others. Creating the fashions of the future requires discipline, ingenuity, and a skill set possessed by few. The Academy of Art University intends to equip students with the expertise and hands-on knowledge to truly excel in the fashion industry.
